Secret #16: My Entertainment Addiction: Guest Post by Jody Hedlund (Plus a Giveaway)

By Jody Hedlund, @JodyHedlund

I honestly don't have much time to watch TV. And even if I did, we don't have cable. With the big cumbersome antenna my husband rigged up on top of our roof, we get a few basic channels. So that helps in keeping the temptation to overdose on entertainment at bay.
Nevertheless, I admit, I do have one television show that I watch regularly, without fail. I don't know that I'd go as far to call it my entertainment addiction. But in the ten plus years that the show has been airing, I've maybe missed a handful of episodes. Maybe.

And what show is it that has the ability to hold my attention year after year?

Survivor.

Yes, I'm a Survivor fan.

Actually, my husband and I are fans together. The show is our once a week date-night. He stops on his way home from work at 9:00 pm and picks up a big burrito from Qdoba. Then when he gets home, we split the burrito, sit down in our reclining loveseat, and watch our show together. We do it every week, and during the summers or betweens seasons, we miss that special fun time.

We've tried watching other shows together, like Downtown Abbey. But there's just something about Survivor that has kept us returning to the show.

Of course, neither of us would EVER want to actually go out into the wilderness and participate in the game of Survivor. We're both too wimpy for that. I could never eat some of the food that they have. I'd likely be one of the first voted off. Or I'd get injured. Or I'd be complaining the whole time about being hungry, wet, and tired.

I'd much rather "participate" in the show from the temperature-controlled comfort of my couch.

I suppose it's my competitive nature that keeps me coming back to the show week after week, season after season.  It's always interesting to see who will survive the challenges and what lengths people will go to in order to win a million dollars.

Of course, I don't always agree with the tactics people use during the course of the game.

But the show has been an eye-opening study on human nature of both the strengths and weaknesses that people exhibit under intense pressure.

What about you? What's your favorite TV show? Any other Survivor fans out there?

Publisher's Weekly calls Unending Devotion "A meaty tale of life amid the debauchery of the lumber camps of 1880s Michigan . . . exciting and unpredictable to the very end."

To celebrate the release of Unending Devotion, Jody is giving away a signed copy. Leave a comment (along with your email address) to enter the drawing. Valid only with US or Canadian addresses. Giveaway ends Sunday, September 30, at noon (PST).

  1. My current favorite tv shows are BBC's "Merlin" (I love medieval and it's not "R" rated like the other medieval dramas out there) and "Once Upon a Time" (again, the medieval/fairy tale setting).

For "reality tv", I was never able to get into "Survivor" but I enjoy watching "19 Kids and Counting" ... but the guilty pleasure I keep coming back to is "Dancing with the Stars" =P

    1. I just caught up on Once Upon a Time...love it! I'm excited to see where this new season takes it, since it'll be so different than the first season.

    2. Me too! Last month, my younger brother and I sat down to watch the season finale we had DVR'ed --I must admit I had been procrastinating on watching that last episode because I was afraid it would leave me hanging. Needless to say, I'm glad season 2 starts next week!

  2. We don't have cable either. In fact, our TV doesn't even have the converter thingy on it...it's that old. But we watch DVDs or things on the internet. And my parents live next door, and they have satellite. So, if we really want to watch something, we go to their house. We were acquainted with one of the men (Pappy) on Survivor years ago. He was a judge from the town we once lived in where my husband served a church. And his daughter was a former Miss Georgia. She thought my twins looked like her when she was little, and wanted a picture with them when they were five. So that season was pretty neat to watch.

I'm not much of a TV fan, but my favorite shows right now are Downton Abbey and Lark Rise to Candleford re-runs, although I watch via DVD or Amazon Prime. Andy Griffith is always a favorite at our house, and believe it or not, I like Good Luck, Charlie on Disney! LOL

    Enjoyed the post!

    1. How cool that you knew a contestant on Survivor! We once knew a contestant on American Idol, but still didn't watch it. Not sure why...

  3. I like Survivor as well although I find some seasons are more exciting than others. I haven't decided if I'm going to get into this new season or not. I like other reality shows as well but try to limit how many I watch otherwise I'm glued to the TV each night and don't get other things accomplished like I'd like to. (Like reading and writing!)

    1. Shelly, TV definitely can distract us from our goals, can't it?! I once had to take a TV fast for a month so I could get my motivation back. I was shocked at how much free time I had.

  4. My favorite addiction is NCIS. The plot lines can be a little predictable, but I love love love the characters. As far as reality tv goes, I used to watch The Bachelor for entertainment purposes, but now that I've limited my TV viewing, I catch an occasional ep of Dancing With the Stars.

Love the way you and your hubby have Survivor Date Nights, Jody!

    1. Thanks, Lisa! We like those kind of low key date nights! :-) And by the way, BIG congrats on your Carol Award! So proud of you!!

    2. The Bachelor is definitely my guilty pleasure. *blush*

    3. Lindsay! I'm so happy to find another embarrassed-to-admit-to-watching-bachelor fan. I love and hate that show! :)

    4. I know...I know!! Are you excited Sean is the next bachelor, though? I really loved him on Emily's season. I'm just hoping he doesn't end up with some trashy girl!

  5. My favorite show is Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman reruns--does that count? ;)

My husband and I sometimes watch The Amazing Race, too, although I haven't seen that in some time.

It was so nice meeting you at ACFW, Lindsay!

    1. Heidi, I love Dr Quinn as well and own all the seasons so I get to watch reruns whenever I want! Such a shame they don't make shows like that anymore. Always great to hear of another true Dr Quinn fan!

    2. I'm a Dr. Quinn fan as well. Wish there were more wholesome shows like that! Wish they would have continued it out and not stopped it when they did. Really frustrating. Oh well.

    3. I used to watch Dr. Quinn all the time!!

  6. Ahhh, Heidi, I love that you mentioned Dr. Quinn. Oh, Sully. :) Oh, and Amy, I'm so glad to hear someone mention Lark Rise to Candleford. Love that show! (Especially Alfie and Minnie. :) )

I don't watch much TV either...never had cable, so I guess I don't know what I'm missing. BUT, I am addicted to Downton Abbey. :) I also love NBC's Parenthood. Don't always catch it when it's on, but thankfully, I've got Hulu for that. :)

    1. Melissa,

Are congrats in order for you? I thought I heard somewhere that you got a book contract? Forgive me if I'm wrong! But do tell me more if I'm right. :-)

    2. Yes, Jody, Melissa will be joining you as a Bethany House author! I'm so proud to be her CP. :)

    3. Yes, Jody, you're right (as Linds said)...it's so exciting! I still can't believe it's for real!!

    4. Oh Wow!! I didn't realize you were going to be writing for Bethany House! What genre are you writing? Are you in our Bethany House author email loop yet?

      Delete
    5. I'm writing contemporary romance--romantic comedy, actually. Yay! I'm so ridiculously excited. No, I'm not in the author loop yet, but I met a couple Bethany authors at ACFW and they mentioned something about it...

  7. You rooted for anyone in particular this go around? Lisa? We watch a lot of Law & Order & some NCIS and if nothing else is on we watch Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives.

    1. So far I'm rooting for Lisa Welchel (From Facts of Life) and also for Michael Skupin. But it's too early to tell! I always root for the person with the most character and who plays with the most savvy. :-)

    2. I LOVE Law and Order and CSI. Crime shows in general make me happy...maybe I should have been a suspense author.

  8. Good morning, everyone!! Great to see you all here today and fun to hear all of your favorite shows! Yes, to those of you Downtown Abbey fans, it is a close second (for me, but probably not to my hubby!). :-)

  10. I'm right there with you, Jody. I don't watch much TV, but make time for two shows - and will DVR them if I'm not home to watch them: Castle and Downton Abbey. That's it. Castle's season premier was last night, so I'm all set. :) And CONGRATS on your newest release. I'm so excited for you!

    1. I LOVE Downtown Abbey. It stinks that it doesn't return for awhile. I've heard of Castle but never watched it...

  11. I wish Lisa ups her game!! She's far too likeable to see her crash and burn! I love how Skupin knows what he's doing and reads the crowd.
I don't watch much TV at all, other than Downton Abbey, Survivor and the odd thing that catches my eye. Oh, and the Disney channel I LOVE Phineas and Ferb!!!

    1. Jennifer, do you guys get British TV there, since Canada is like a commonwealth or whatever? Because if so, that means you get Downtown Abbey before the rest of us, I think!

      Delete
    2. I hear you, Jennifer. I'm hoping Lisa ups her game too. I really don't want to see her voted out first! I shall see soon! Getting ready to watch Survivor just as soon as my hubby gets home here in a little bit! :-)

      Delete
    3. No! We can't get Downton Abbey until PBS airs it in January!! :(

  12. I'm not sure why, but I just can't watch reality shows. I think it has something to do with the fact that they aren't really "reality". Because I've worked with a film crew I know it's all scripted (even improv has some planning), there's a TV crew just inches from the characters and none of them are in any danger. But I know a lot of people enjoy the entertainment of Survivor anyway. I like Heartland, Murdoch Mysteries, some of the home decorating shows. I watched every episode of Little House on the Prairie and Beachcomber in their day.

(No need to enter me in the contest as I already have Jody's books.)

    1. Wow, that's neat that you have worked with film crews. Isn't it funny that we KNOW it's not reality and yet we still talk about it like it is?

    Thanks for hosting, Lindsay. :)

    1. Hi Sarah,

Reclining love seat is really just a couch that has the pullout part (like a reclining chair). It's so comfortable! And cozy! :-)

  15. Thanks for this post, Jody and thank you to Lindsay for hosting!

I gave up on watching TV and it seems like it's been ages ago.I watch occasionally, but there are many times when I even forget that TV exists. *grin*

But Jody, I find it SOO cute that you and your husband make it a date! *Sigh* =)

Thanks for the chance to win!

  16. Hi Jody! I'm a Survivor fan too, but must admit that it's slowly losing its "new". My favorite, favorite show is Amazing Race. My husband and I actually sent in a video to be on the show but we didn't get selected. Boo hoo!

    1. I'm surprised Survivor hasn't lost its new for my hubby and I, especially after all these years! Some seasons aren't as exciting as others. But we still seem to watch it anyway! :-) And I like Amazing Race too. But fell away from it eventually. Boy, that would have been cool if you and your hubby had made the show!

  17. I think it's great that you and your guy have a standing date night, Jody.

Gwynly and I enjoy an episode of a TV show on Netflix every night. We've been on a police show bent lately, since we both enjoy them, but he watches shows like Downton Abbey from time to time with me so I can indulge my love of history and romance.
