Lucky Number Seven

Tag, I’m it!

Yes, I’ve been tagged by my awesome friend Jessica Patch in the Lucky 7 Meme. I don’t really know what “meme” means, but here are the rules (some of which I might break…):

Thank the person who tagged you.

Thank you, Jess. You’re beautimous and I lub you!

Okay, and the rest of the directions:

Go to page 77 in my current manuscript.

Go to line 7.

Copy the next 7 lines/paragraphs and post them as they're written (no cheating!).

I’m also supposed to pass the meme on to 7 other writers, but um, yeah, not gonna call people out specifically. However, if you want to participate in your own blog, be sure to let me know when and I’ll stop by!

Okay, so here is the passage from my current ms, Defining Grace.

It’s contemporary fiction with elements of women’s fiction, romance, and suspense.

“Well, why do you have to date someone who’s just like you, anyway? Don’t they say opposites attract?”
Grace twirled her hair and chewed her lip. “Yeah, but my parents have always said we shouldn’t be unequally yoked.”
“Unequally what?”
“Yoked. Like with oxen.” Jordan stared blankly at her and shrugged. She sighed. “It just means you shouldn’t marry someone who doesn’t believe the same things as you. It’s hard to make decisions and stuff when you don’t agree on the basics of life.”
“Whoa, whoa, hold up.” Jordan held up his hands and shook his head. “I’m not asking anyone to marry me. I’m not sure I’ll even ever get married. I’m just talking about going to a party together.”
Grace shifted her position. “I know, but my parents have always said that ‘Every date is a potential mate.’”
Jordan laughed. “Well, that’s not been my experience. There are plenty of girls I’ve dated who I would never marry. They’d probably cheat on me and take all my money. They were just hot. And we had fun together.” He cocked his head. “Besides, do you always do everything your parents tell you to?”

Your Turn: Do you have a lucky or favorite number? Mine’s 11, because I was born in November. Creative, right? If you do, what is it and why is it your lucky number?

  1. "They'd probably cheat on me and take all my money." Love it!

Umm, I don't think I've got a lucky number, although I really liked 32 growing up--because it was Karl Malone's jersey number. :) Isn't seven, like, God's number? If so, I think I'll make it my new favorite number.

    1. Like Jess says below, I think seven means completion or something in the Bible. So yeah, that's a good reason for liking a number. :D

  2. Brave girl, Lindsay... posting part of your ms. Intriguing! I'd def. read further to see how you explore the unequally yoked aspect. :)

I've always loved #13. Had it as my basketball jersey number in jr high and high school.

    1. Thanks, Barb. I probably should have said that Grace is a young college student trying to sort through her beliefs and why she believes them.

And intriguing...most people think 13 is "unlucky." Although I don't REALLY believe in luck, so I like how you'll balking superstition. ;)

  3. Great excerpt, Lindsay!

Hmmm...I don't have a lucky number - but it seems that 4 is the magical number among my friends. I have a lot of friends with 4 children - it's weird. :)

    1. My husband is from a family with four kids as well! We've talked about having 2-4. I like even numbers but four sounds like a lot...

  4. Well, it's not the 11th, but today is your lucky day, Lindsay! You won not one but two online contests!
    :O)
And yeah ... I'd read this. That Jordan character sounds like a real ... um, character. (Sorry, it's early here.)

  5. I love this excerpt. And I agree with Melissa. And can just hear a guy saying that. lol.
Lucky number? 40 seem to occur in the Bible over and over...rained for forty days, Moses was on the mountain talking to God for 40 days, the Israelite kids wandered for 40 days...

    1. Yes, unfortunately, so can I. :)

That's true. There are a lot of "40s" in the Bible. I'm fascinated by God's use of numbers...why He chose certain ones to repeat.

  6. LOL! I just dated guys that were hot too. Toss out the mate stuff. ;) jk!

So glad you posted your excerpt. I don't believe in luck so I have no lucky numbers although 7 means completion most of the time in the Bible so I'll go with that. Ha!

I don't believe in luck either, just blessings. And I've been super blessed!

  7. Great!

I did the same as you when I was picked for this, I didn't want to name people so I opened it up for anyone who wanted to participate.

    Thanks for sharing.

  9. Loved your excerpt. My favorite number is 4. I think it goes back to a crush on a hockey player. 4 was his number. I don't even associate the number with him anymore. It's just stuck with me ever since.

  10. Good excerpt from your MS! I don't have a lucky number, but I have always liked 7. I think for what it means in the Bible: perfection/completion.

    Cute post!

  11. Really liked the excerpt, Lindsay. Cute idea for a post.
My favorite number is 4. It seems great things happen when that number is involved. We moved in 2004, our address contains a 4, we have 4 bedrooms and I have 4 kids . . . if you count my husband. :-)
