My Love Story

Five years ago today, I married my best friend.

It’s really hard to believe that 5 years have passed. We’ve been through a lot (law school and grad school were big hurdles!), been blessed a lot, and loved a lot.

Mike and I were friends for several years before we started dating. We hung out in the same group of friends who went to our church and Arizona State University—we would all ride the shuttle from West to Main campus, eat lunch together during the week, and hold game nights on the weekends.

I guess Mike liked me from the beginning (so sweet!), but I had no clue. I was going through a lot of stuff—my mom was sick for a long time, and finally passed away at the beginning of our junior year—so let’s just say I was “emotionally unavailable” at the time. But he just kept on being my friend and I never knew that he really wanted to ask me out.

Finally, toward the very end of our junior year, Mike and I started talking more frequently. I respected him so much; he was (and still is!) so intelligent, generous, funny, kindhearted, trustworthy, protective, a true friend, and above all, a godly, godly man.

He finally asked me out in April of 2005. We started dating the summer before our senior year (yes, it took me awhile to say yes…that’s another story!) and got engaged a year and a week later.

Then November 18, 2006, I walked down the aisle and have never looked back since.

Happy anniversary to my true love and best friend!

  1. Happy Anniversary!

12 years ago I met my man in Hilton Head. We attended the same college in OH, but hadn't officially met until he came down to visit some friends I was staying with for the summer.

The rest (as they say) is history. :D

  3. Happy anniversary! I hope you and your hubby have a great time celebrating your five years of togetherness.

My hubby and I met over a plate of homemade chocolate chip cookies. He was the baker. I was the gal who snatched the last one off the plate he was carrying at one of our church single group's events as an excuse to meet him.

  4. Thanks, Ruth!

And Keli, that's awesome! So does he do all the baking around the house or do you do some as well?

  5. I can't believe it has been 5 years! Time sure flies!

My hubby and I met at an engagement party for a wedding we were both in. He was dating someone at the time, but said that when he saw me at the party, he knew I was the one. We didn't start dating for a few more months because he lived in a different state. It's the best feeling in the world to find your soul mate.

  6. I know, I can't believe it either, Nancy!

That's awesome. I didn't know that's how you met. Soooo sweet.

  7. Drue and I met on my first day of on-the-job training at Sears. He was leaning against a stack of vacuums. Since I was seriously dating someone at the time, he told his dad the same week he met me that I was the kind of girl he would marry someday. Little did he know, I was not happy in my current relationship and couldn't stop thinking about HIM! Two months of work lunch breaks, helping one another with customers, and general flirting led up to our first date. Five weeks later, he came back from a family vacation in Alaska with an engagement ring (we had never talked about marriage prior). I was floored. We were married on Dec 17, 2004 (exactly 5 months after our first date). So, needless to say, we both believe in love at first sight. : )

  12. Happy anniversary, Lindsay! What a cool story. My husband and I met through a mutual friend, dated long distance for a year, and then both got jobs in the same city so we could actually date for real before we got engaged. :)

  13. Thanks, TC!

And Sarah, wow! I don't know if I could have done the long distance thing. That would be tough. Kudos to you for sticking it out. Sounds like it was worth it! ;)

  14. Happy 5 Years Lindsay and Mike!

Justin & I just celebrated our 5-year anniversary too! We met 9 years ago at a hiking club in Arizona. The funny thing is that we both grew up in NJ and were transplants to AZ. So I believe it was fate ...

  16. How fun to hear your story, Lindsay. Happy Anniversary a little late.
I met my husband when he knocked me down in a karate studio. Yep, we like to tell people he swept me off my feet ... but that's stretching the truth just a bit.
    ;o)

  17. Hello, Lindsay! I am so happy I found your blog. This is a great post and such a fun way to celebrate your anniversary (this comes very late, but happy 5 years to you both)! I look forward to reading more of your posts.

My husband and I met 16 years ago, when we were 16, so we've known each other half our lives this year! The first time I saw him was when he was singing on stage for "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" - it was love at first sight (for me)! We were good friends from the start, although I have to say I had other ideas than friendship... :) We started dating when we were 17, married when we were 21 and had our first of four kiddos when we were 24. We'll be celebrating 11 years of marriage this June - my how time flies.

    Loved this post!

    1. Thanks so much for stopping by, Gabrielle! Ah, so your hubby is a performer! I am too. Yay!

And being good friends first is the way to go in my mind...of course, that's how it happened for me, so...I'm biased.

      Congrats on 11 years!
